Quel est le problème ?

Ma volonté cette année est de partager mon expérience, une chose que je trouve chronophage c'est de s'organiser et trouver les bonnes informations pour faire de la veille technologique. J'ai décrit mon organisation dans un blog post précédent, il me reste à partager ce que je trouve et lis.

Pour cela je souhaite avoir sur mon site, des pages représentant une semaine de lecture avec les liens vers les différents articles.

L'architecture du site

Ce site est généré par Gatsby qui est un framework basé sur React. Pour ma veille technologique j'utilise principalement Wallabag sur une instance que j'héberge moi-même. Wallabag me permet de sauvegarder des articles à lire plus tard, je peux les consulter sur mon PC et surtout en mode hors-ligne sur mon téléphone. Wallabag est une superbe alternative open-source à Pocket. Il me faut donc importer dans Gatsby les articles lus dans Wallabag.

Gatsby utilises des datas sources et rends les données accessible via GraphQL.

Il est donc possible via un système de plugin source d'importer des données provenant de fichier, d'API, etc. L'un des plugins source le plus utilisés est gatsby-source-filesystem il importe des fichiers locaux dans Gatsby.

D'autres plugins peuvent utiliser les données et générer de nouveaux nœud par exemple gatsby-transformer-remark qui transforme du contenu markdown pour générer du contenu HTML. C'est avec ces outils que cet article est écrit un fichier markdow importé ensuite transformé en HTML puis inclut dans une page.

Pour Wallabag je vais utiliser l'API qui permet entre autres d'avoir la liste des articles.

La solution

J'ai donc décider de développer un plugin source qui interroge une instance Wallabag, sauvegarde les articles en tant que nœud dans Gatsby. Pour créer les pages "weekly" je prends les nœuds qui m'intéresse (les artices lus) et les groupes via la date de lecture.

Voici dons les différentes étapes dans le workflow Gatsby:

Dans le dossier de votre site Gatsby vous pouvez installer le package via yarn ou npm.

Configuration

Pour communiquer avec votre instance Wallabag il est nécessaire d'avoir l'url de l'API, les identifiants de l'utilisateur et une API clientID, clientSecret.

Il faut maintenant déclarer notre plugin et ses options dans le fichier gatsby-config.js.

Transformer les nodes

Maintenant installé le plugin gatsby-source-wallabag importe automatiquement les articles contenues dans votre instance Wallabag. Pour mon utilisation il est maintenant nécessaire de transformer et préparer cette donnée afin d'ajouter les meta-données nécessaires à la création des pages. Je souhaite que tous les articles archivés soit regroupé par semaine dans une même page.

Pour cela il existe hook dans Gatsby permettant de créer de nouveaux nœuds onCreateNode.

Utiliser les nœuds

Nous avons maintenant toutes les données nécessaires pour construire nos pages: un nœud parent représentant un page "weekly" et des noeuds enfants correspondant aux articles lus.

La création des pages depuis la base de données se fait en exportannt la fonction createPages depuis le fichier gatsby-node.js

Il faut tout d'abord rechercher les nœuds pour chaque pages et les articles associés. Avec ces informations nous pouvons créer des pages en utilisant un template.

Conclusion

Les pages "weekly" sont maintenant génerer de façon automatique via Gatsby. La création de structure intermédiaire me permet de générer un flux RSS également.

Toutes les semaines j'utilise la CI de Gitlab pour lancer le build du site et le mettre à jour.

Pour aller plus loin je souhaiterais ajouter un système pour mettre plus d'informations. Par exemple un système de priorisation (en mettant des tags spécifique sur les articles). J'aimerais également mettre mon ressenti, mes motivations de la semaine, afficher un résumé exprimant mon avis sur les articles.

D'un point de vue technique le plugin source est très basique il serait intéressant de pouvoir spécifier des paramètres de filtre pour ne pas surcharger la base de données Gatsby.

Je suis pour le moment satisfait de mon setup 😄

Retour codeurs en seine 2019

Deuxième année pour moi où j'ai la chance d'aller à "codeurs en seine". Codeurs en seine c'est une journée de conférences autour du monde du développement qui accueille 1000 personnes à Rouen. Je tiens à remercier tous les membres de l'association et les bénévoles pour leurs implications, qui nous permettent d'avoir des conférences de qualitées et GRATUITES. Voici donc quelques mots sur les interventions auxquelles j'ai assisté.

Simple n'est pas stupide par Thierry Croix

Keynote que j'ai beaucoup aimé pour son rythme et son contenu. Thierry Croix commence par nous parler de l'évolution de 2009 à 2019 du nom des métiers dans le Web, en se moquant de certains termes trop utilisés (UX quelquechose Expert). Il fait le constat que tout le monde est expert. Nous avons évolué dans un système compliqué et non complexe. Pour lui il n'y a pas assez de réflexion sur les problèmes de bases. Il est difficile de dire en tant qu'expert auprès de ses clients c'est "juste ça" car souvent pour le client la taille de la solution justifie son prix .

Et si on se préoccupait plus des patterns par Laurent WROBLEWSKI

Conférence technique pour continuer. Laurent nous parle de JavaScript fatigue et des évolutions rapides de l'écosystème web/mobile depuis 2009. Avec ce constat il est important de reconnaitre les patterns, beaucoup de frameworks sont semblables et implémentent ses patterns. Voici la liste des patterns présentés lors de cette conférence:

MVC avec les évolutions dans le temps (MVVM et MVP)
Réactive programming
Singleton
Factory
Strategy
Declarative ui
Mixin

Il y a eu de nombreux exemples sur Angular et Android. En conclusion il est important de voir les patterns avant les frameworks. J'aimerais beaucoup une suite pour cette conférence, l'évolution des frameworks et les patterns utilisés pour répondre aux nouvelles problématiques.

Concevoir des applications résilientes en 2019 par Mickaël Andrieu

Mickael est développeur chez Prestashop. Il nous parle d'un problème survenu chez Prestashop empéchant les utilisateurs de se connecter aux BackOffice. C'est suite à cette interruption de service que la résilience est devenue primordial dans le projet.

Il nous décrit les notions de Service Level Agreement (n9: 99.9, 99.99, 99.999) fournit par les tiers et comment calculer le SLA de son propre service. La résilience est le fait de gérer le cas où un service tiers tombe et ainsi prévoir un mode dégradé.

Lors de cette conférence nous avons le droit à quelques "tips" globaux et en PHP. Il faut toujours mettre un timeout sur les requêtes HTTP, faire du code non bloquant pour les appels aux dépendances, prévoir un fallback en cas d'erreur.

Ensuite nous voyons le pattern Circuit Breaker et son implémentation en PHP avec différentes librairies disponibles.

En conclusion le pattern Circuit Breaker est intéressant mais limité aux indisponibilités (timeout) et il faudra également implémenter la gestion d'erreur provenant des services tiers (Erreur HTTP 50X).

Pourquoi ça rame ? Deboguer le front avec Webpagetest et Chrome Dev Tools Par Jean-Pierre Vincent

Ce quicky commence par le constat que la performance Web est importante pour l'expérience utilisateur, l'accessibilité et l'écologie. Cependant les organisations investissent dans la performance Web car ça rapporte de l'argent surtout en e-commerce.

Lors de la première partie nous nous intéressons à Webpagetest, un outil qui existe depuis longtemps qui est toujours intéressant. Jean-Pierre nous explique comment lancer des tests et comprendre les indicateurs principaux:

Temps de chargement
Temps d'interaction
TTFB = le lag entre le backend et le frontend
Waterfall = le chargement des différents assets
Visualisation des écrans (captures d'écrans)

Il est également possible de bannir un sous-domaine afin de voir l'implication des services tiers sur la performance. Webpagetest permet également de comparer deux tests et la vitesse de rendu via les captures d'écrans.

Nous passons ensuite sur le profiler de chrome. Jean-Pierre nous rappelle qu'il est important de tester avec un appareil et une connexion correspondant à celui des utilisateurs finaux. Avec le profiler nous pouvons inspecter les animations, la stack javascript et voir quel sous-domaine est trop gourmand en ressources.

En conclusion ces outils nécessitent un temps d'apprentissage important, mais sont nécessaires pour comprendre quelles sont les causes des ralentissements. J'ai regretté que ce soit un quicky car le sujet mériterait plus de temps. Il est intéressant de noter que le profiler de Firefox avait beaucoup de retard, même si l'écart se réduit. Les parts de marché restent en faveur de chrome. Concernant Lighthouse cela reste un outil de découverte.

Keynote après la pause déjeuner. Benjamin nous raconte l'histoire de son entreprise via les différentes étapes cruciales:

Quicky orienté Troll. Que ce soit le JavaScript, Python, PHP, Java, C# nous avons vu avec humour certaines incohérences via des exemples. A la fin du talk Pierre nous laisse un lien vers un github qui fournit les explications du comportement des langages dans les situations citées.

Montée de version sans interuption par Nelson Dionisi

Nelson a commencé le talk par nous présenter les problèmes qui les ont poussés à aller vers une montée de version sans interruption.

Petit retour en arrière en 2017 ou l'entreprise faisait un déploiement tout les 3 mois. Du coup avec le nombre de clients augmentant il fallait maintenir jusqu'à 6 versions du soft. Les montées de versions pouvaient prendre plusieurs heures. Ensuite en décrivant l'architecture load-balancer => plusieurs serveurs applicatifs => une base de données.

En 2017 il fallait couper toutes les applications du load-balancer lors de l'update. Ils ont choisi de faire des versions de schemas de base de données et software toujours compatibles avec la version précédente. Grâce à cela il est possible de modifier la DB ensuite upgrade les applications. C'est grâce à la compatibilité des versions vN et vN+1 peuvent cohabiter le temps de tous passer en vN+1.

Nous avons eu ensuite quelques exemples (l'ajout d'une colonne en plusieurs étapes, la suppression). Pour terminer Nelson nous a partagé quelques tips pour ne pas reproduire les mêmes erreurs. Il ne faut pas faire de select * car les plans d'exécution ne sont plus bons ensuites. Faire attention aux locks de la base de données lors de l'update. Utiliser les mots-clés validate/novalide. Ne pas attendre trop longtemps pour les migrations (timeout) et essayer de la jouer à un autre moment. Avoir la dernière version son SGBD permet d'avoir des temps de locks plus courts.

Avec cet ensemble d'actions, ils peuvent maintenant faire des upgrades de façon quotidienne.

Le deep-learning démystifié par Florent D'halluin

Les algorithmes font peurs. Le deep learning n'est pas une forme d'intelligence. Nous n'avons pas de vocabulaire commun avec la machine pour apprendre il faut donc faire une approche itérative. Il faut pouvoir donner du feedback à son model. L'algorithme ressort des estimations pour les différentes sorties possibles. Florent nous parle de Stochastic gradient descent.

Dans une seconde partie nous voyons l'architecture du réseau de neurones et comment l'information se propage. Le principe de backpropagtion permet d'améliorer le model. Il faut faire attention au sur-apprentissage qui fausserait les résultats, il ne sera efficace que sur un jeu de données restreint. Il est nécessaire d'avoir un jeu d'apprentissage et un jeu de validation. Le jeu d'apprentissage doit être suffisament varié, pour que le model ne prenne pas de "raccourcis", exemple de classification chiens/chats, les chiens sont souvent sur fond verts dans l'herbe. Il faut savoir stopper l'apprentissage même si le taux de réussite n'est pas de 100%.

Florent nous a ensuite présenté son "bestiaires" les réseaux neuronnaux actuels. Les réseaux neuronaux et le deep learning sont de superbes outils, mais Florent nous rappelle que nous transférons nos biais au model. Et pour le moment il n'est pas simple d'expliquer comment le réseau est arrivé à ce résultat.

20 choses à connaitre quand on fait du Kubernetes par Alain Regnier

Cette conférence à commencer par un rappel sur la différence entre les machines virtuels et les containers. Puis nous avons eu une brève présentation de kubernetes qui orchestre les containers. Kubernetes provient de Google Borg. Google qui utilise énormément les containers et cela depuis bien avant Docker.

Utiliser Google Kurbenetes Engine, pour faire des tests
Faire des alias bash + activer l'autocomplétion pour kubectl
Il est possible de spécifier le format de sortie. Ex json + utilisation de jq
Utiliser la console shell de Google Kubernetes Engine
kubectl top, kubectl proxy
Il est préférable d'utiliser Ingress pour exposer les services
Ne pas utiliser kubectl run mais les fichiers de conf
Mettre la configuration dans un repo git
ne pas utiliser le default namepsace
Il est possible de faire du port forward sur un service/pod

Pour terminer la journée j'ai eu le plaisir d'assister pour la première fois à une représentation de M. Leguédois. Carte blanche qui a commencé par le concept de retro-action.

Cette carte blanche aux apparences de OneManShow se moque des méthodes agiles dans certaines organisations:

Sprint = planning car ce sont des features à déployer à une date précise
Il est important de livrer une fonctionnalité pour savoir ce quelle doit faire
On apprend lorsque l'on met en prod, avant la mise en production ce n'est que spéculation
Le fait d'accroître les ressources ne fait pas terminer le projet + rapidement mais permet de délivrer plus de fonctionnalités
Utilisation à plusieurs reprises de l'expression "ça tombe en marche"
Il est inefficace de mettre la pression sur les développeurs
Il est important de faire des features les plus petites possibles
Pour le client réactivité = vitesse
Il est important de faire simple
Tacle sur les certifications agiles
Les DevOps n'existent pas 🦄
L'importance de mettre en relation les développeurs et les utilisateurs
Il est primordial de faire un découpage fonctionnel et non technique

Conclusion

Superbe journée, "étonnamment" j'ai beaucoup apprécié les conférences non techniques, alors que je venais principalement pour la technique. Je pense que cela est dû à mon statut de "senior UX expert" développeur 😉. Je repars avec de nombreux concepts que ce soit technique ou organisationnel à étudier et pourquoi pas les mettre en place.

Today, a developer needs to be aware. Aware of the rising technologies, aware of the security vulnerabilities, aware of the business opportunities. It can be overwhelming if you don't have a daily routine when it comes to finding the right information and, more generally, learning.

I've bee working for years now, I've read more than 2000 articles and I'm now ready to share how I've developed my "learning stack". I took the time to analyze my learning process because I think it can be very helpful for many young developer.

In this article, my definition of developer is

The developer's role is to transform, link and connect information to create value (product/feature/time saving tasks...).

Learning ? Why ?

When I'm learning my goal is to ensure I choose the best algorithm, techno, tool within the context I know to respond to business needs. The feeling when I understand something new is awesome, the "world" around me become clearer, I love learning new things. If you're looking for a job it's interesting to add some keywords on your resume, it may help you to get interviews.

Learning is a valuable skill, computer science is moving fast, it's important to be updated. A lot of developers share their work, you can use it, all this work is accessible and free, via social network, Open Source projects. All this information help you to see the big picture, don't reinvent the wheel, use your time to create value (self-fulfilment, business). It's also easier to give precise response to a problem with more context and knowledge.

After some research you can respond to:

Do I need this techno ?
Is there a better alternative ?
How to become visible to recruiters ?
Can another solution will help me ?

During a debugging session it's occurred to me to use an idea from an article I read two weeks ago. I read the article only by curiosity after some time it helps me a lot.

It's important to know what you know but the most important it's to know your unknown for becoming an expert. Nobody knows everything, don't be put too much expectation on you learning. A well-known developer Dan Abramov (Redux co-author, React developer) shared recently an article listing things he doesn't know. It's normal to switch between confidence and "imposter syndrome".

Step 1: What's your objectives ?

Be pragmatic

You can't be an expert on everything. It's easier to learn things you like, that's why you must select some subject, else you'll find yourself overwhelmed very fast. Themes I choose :

Golang a promising language interesting new concept for me + type safety.
Linux I love the philosophy / mechanisms.
Frontend framework mostly React.
Software Architecture currently CQRS/Event Sourcing + microservices debate.
Startup ecosystem / organisation / self-improvement.

My goals vary I like to have update on Kernel development but I will not spend too much time on this. Learning kernel mechanisms helps me to understand "how computers works" but doesn't help me much in my day to day job.

Don't be obsessed by new/shinny articles and technologies. It's good to have an opinion on them, but your time is precious so you need to be sure it will give you valuable informations before deep diving. You can find tendency from the annual StackOverflow Survey, it can help you to choose subjects.

Step 2: Where to find good informations ?

You must select trusted sources

Finding good sources of knowledge is a long term work.

My main source of information is Twitter where I follow people and enterprise account (I don't rely on aggregator).

My Criteria for finding a good source of information on twitter:

The account tweets about subject I'm interested in.
Quality over quantity, Don't spam (10 tweets a day max).
The account is the author of a video/source I liked.
The account is author of a framework/tool/product.
The account share interesting articles.

For aggregated data, I prefer to go on platform like Reddit where community can share/upvote articles. In this type of platforms communities pre-filter information and you can grab the best. There's some subreddit from my list:

I use other tools but Twitter and Reddit are my primary sources. They provide me with enough information/links.

You can find relevant information on other platforms:

HackerNews: same as Reddit
Github: You can find some topics on it, using trends
Medium/Youtube/Podcasts: Like Twitter you can follow entities and find it via hashtags.
RSS (not dead): Some people consider them as deprecated but are really useful and you don't rely on one platform. Unlike on Twitter you can find days/weeks old article.

Step 3: How do I manage all the inflow ?

Filter, Pick, Trash

Now you can browse all your sources to find articles, when you find an interesting article you can do a rapid scan but don't read them. I recommend saving somewhere your findings and you will read them afterward.

Your time is precious it's preferably to create a queue, you may not have the time to read them all. I recommend separating discovery, from consuming/learning because you will need to choose which articles to read, it depends on your time, mood, goal.

For me, chasing new articles is an everyday routine. I save all my discovery in my Wallabag instances. Wallabag has nice functionalities:

Save articles, reading view (remove ads/bloat).
You can add tags.
List Read/Unread articles.
Web + Mobile sync for offline use.

You can use other services to save your finding:

Pocket a proprietary alternative to Wallabag.
Use social media features: likes, Github start...
Todo app.
Browser bookmarks.

Step 4: Consume your queue. The fun part!

Congratulation after multiple steps, here it's time to enjoy. First you must schedule a time frame.

Personally I read articles every-day. When I work remotely I read 10-15min after lunch, I choose short articles. Twice a week a take the train to Paris and use the travel time 45min to 1H to read long articles. When I'm not om my computer I use the Wallabag App on my Smartphone it's my primary tools for reading. I like the experience, the reader view with the main content and without all the ads.

It depends on your constraints, you can choose different time frame:

Morning routines.
After lunch routines.
Transports.

After checking my consuming habits, it's likely a FILO (First In Last Out). I prefer to read the latest finding, they are the most appealing to me.

Don't forget to take note, write comments. They will be useful in the next step.

Step 5: Share your knowledge with others

Spread the world

Congratulations you learn something new. It's time to give back. I identify 3 ways to give back to the community.

The first one is to thank the article's author: like/applause or DM only takes a second. People take time to share with you, lets them know you appreciate it.

The second one is to take part/promote the content you like. If you use some social networks to find (Reddit, Twitter), an upvote or a retweet will help authors to gain visibility and others like you to find the best resources. After an interesting reading I often tweet about it via the share button in Wallabag.

Don't be shy to share your experience/knowledge with others. "Last Friday Talk" session are perfect for sharing your finding, knowledge within your team.
